Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 stick butter
  • 1/4 cup vegetable shortening
  • 1 tsp baking soda
  • 2 tsp baking powder
  • 1-2 tbsp sugar (1/4 cup if making shortcake)
  • 1/2 tsp salt (optional)
  • 1/2-1 cup of buttermilk

Alternates

  • If buttermilk is not being used, sub 2 more tsp baking powder for the baking soda.
  • A total of 1/2 cup fat is needed and it can be almost any low-water fat.

Directions

  1. Mix the dry ingredients
  2. Cut butter and shortening into dry mixture, the final texture should be sandy
  3. Mix liquid in and finish combining by hand
  4. Bake at 350°F for 8-12 minutes until golden brown
